Comparing and Judging
Comparison is an essential thing. But this is often misinterpreted. According to google the meaning of the word ‘comparison’ is “a consideration or estimate of the similarities or dissimilarities between two things or people”. Comparison is often done to judge in case of people. “He is bad at dancing” “she is not so good at listening” and so on, are often said because of this comparison with people who have gained fame and recognition. The meaning doesn’t say it is a tool to judge others. Especially students are the one who really gets affected due to this comparison. One student scores maximum marks and the others couldn’t then the teacher will be like (especially to the one(s) who scored the least) “you need to study and work like him. He is attentive, does all works on time...” and keep on praising him. What if the other did study and worked hard? What if the situations in their homes or hostels were unfavourable to study? No one sees what’s behind the curtains. All we can see is what’s on stage. Basically, we are judging someone on what we see. Just like judging a book by its cover.
We can’t know if a person is sensitive or bold on a single look on the face. We need to know more about someone before judging. It is the nature of the human mind to compare. That is how we say “we are not cute” or “I am not good at that” and so on. This is because we know someone that has earned much recognition over time. When we say “she is better than me at singing”, we look at many things she has and we don’t. That’s a comparison and that is not so bad. But complaining or judging some of those differences is not so good. We all are born with inborn talent and talents we acquire over time. We have what we have. A person buys an SUV while another doesn’t even own a vehicle yet. But working hard and earning more, that person can be able to afford a vehicle as time goes. Just like that all our talents and skills do need practice and improvement to gain fame and recognition. For improving we can compare ourselves. But don’t compare a car to a bicycle. If you have a role modal and is trying to be like that person, look into his/her past because that person also had a time with less or no fame. We can compare ourselves to that part. Both you and your favourite person’s past in the growing phase see what the differences are and turn them into similarities in your own way. It will need a lot of time, patience, hard work, dedication, and comparison in the way mentioned earlier. Without comparison, it is hard to differentiate things. A singer is different from a music composer. We say this due to differences that exist over the similarities. And these similarities and differences were found with comparison. Just like the word means. So compare to improve and not to judge. And judge if you are entirely sure about the person’s work and what’s behind the curtains!
